WORLD CUPS – HOW MANY IN A LIFETIME?

25 Feb

old-world-cup

The Finals kick off on June 11 in South Africa, billions will watch, people will cross deserts just to find a transistor radio broadcasting the games. It’s a month of the best competition in the universe. And it happens every four years. So how many World Cups can you watch in a lifetime?

20 – if you ate your veggies, avoided the drink and spent your spare time deciphering crossword puzzles and doing yoga.

15 – assuming you sometimes ate a carrot, kept the drinks for the weekend, sometimes mowed the grass, didn’t smoke it and occasionally read a book.

10 – if you smoked twenty cigarettes a day, knew the clerks by name at KFC, watched Sean Hannity on Fox News every night, and hated getting out of the La-Z-Boy to walk to the kitchen unless it was to the refrigerator for full fat ice-cream at 2am.

3-5 – if you got a horrible disease or died tragically young like James Dean

0 – if you preferred baseball

Being Andorran, or a Faeroe Islander, or Fijian, it won’t matter how many World Cups you can fit into a lifetime. You’ll never see your team play in it. Sadly, being Scottish, I fear my bones are heading for the same oblivion.

The first world cup I enjoyed was France 1998. I kinda remember Italia 90 or USA 94, but they pissed me off as I wasn’t able to watch my cartoons, it was soccer on every channel. Now 20 years later I can’t believe I just can’t wait for Jun 11. My favorite world cup was Japan 2002 as luckily I got to see my country, Ecuador, on its first time in a world cup. Altho we didn’t advanced to the next round, I watched almost every single match.. and felt so empty the next day it ended, i almost dropped a tear with Safri Duo’s played a live anthem theme on the background. I’ve the feeling this world cup will be the same, with wavin’ flag celebration mix. I’m impatiently waiting for the world’s party to start.

There was no official World Cup final match in 1950. The tournament winner was decided by a final round-robin group contested by four teams (Uruguay, Brazil, Sweden, and Spain). However, Uruguay’s 2–1 victory over Brazil was the decisive match (and also coincidentally one of the last two matches of the tournament) which put them ahead on points and ensured that they finished top of the group as world champions. Therefore, this match is often considered the final of the 1950 World Cup.
